Singer Phil set for Wheatfields challenge
Thursday 13th August 2009
CHIPPY Fryer - better known as top Frank Sinatra tribute artist Phil Fryer - has joined up with a chippy owner in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for charity.
Phil Fryer, who picked up the nickname 'Chippy' at school, is training for a two-day, 222-mile sponsored bike ride to raise money for Wheatfields Hospice and the British Heart Foundation.
He mentioned this to Gary Womersley, of Hillycroft Fisheries, who immediately offered to give him £500 in sponsorship.
Phil said: "I am delighted with that - it's a great start."
The Castle 2 Castle bike ride will start on August 19 at Hazlewood Castle, Leeds, and end up at Windsor Castle.
I had been racing for years before that so my legs were fine, but now I have had a few years off so have chosen a shorter run. But it will still be challenging."
He is also facing the challenge of finding sponsors.
Last time he could rely on customers at his Churwell barber shop, who all knew him. But these days he sings for strangers across the world.
He said: "It is going to be hard, though I have got a loyal following. I am just hoping for the best and that I can raise a few quid for two great causes.
"I chose Wheatfields as my dad died in there 25 years ago, and the BHF because my friend Phil Eastwood died on his bike of a heart attack six years ago, aged just 46."
Phil is also working with the West Leeds Walking Group, who have organised a walk to coincide with the start of his ride at Hazlewood Castle.
He is hoping people will join him for the first 20 miles of his ride, collecting sponsorship to do so.
Anyone wanting to join Phil for the ride, or to sponsor him, should ring him or text him on 07971 184290.
